"Boycott BET" Really! ... Where Do You Stand?

Today when I came on to FaceBook and saw an event to “Boycott BET”

This is my response. If you like to chime in, click the link above if you want to attend then click the link…

Do you want real change and if so how and do you have a real plan to help us as a people… Respect for the read in advance…. Sammi

The Comment:

I stopped watching BET 5years ago or longer; shortly after or before it stopped being black owned. Because I did not like how it seem to push the stereotypes; we can only become or are about; music; sports; and videos or video hoes. And these religion shows that scam good people out of their hard earn cash with false prophets and fake healers

And I am not sorry I want and demand better. I want a station where real unity for us as a people can have a real voice in what is seen and watched; or if something happens to one of us they would rally with us. Needless to say BET does not do that; just like the other stations do not do that. (A sistah can dream)

I am not sorry I want children to know they can be teachers; doctors; attorneys; scientists; writers; new broadcasters; and business owners; anything there heart desires including sports stars and singers. Just because we can and I know the sky is the limit to our goals and dreams. But the reality is most will not be famous… But they/we can be proud of what they/we do in life.

Even when I was a child and BET was on I wanted to see more…

Perhaps I am ungrateful…

I am not sure if you can blame BET for the things you do not like about us as a people. I think it is sad that a lot of violence and rape of our communities happen at our hands. (Because we as a people never learned to heal and stop accepting bullschitt that is forced down our throats. Because we as a people stop fighting for our basic human rights.) We sold out for a job and some crumbs. But most are not ready to face the ugly truth and do anything to change it once it has been accepted.

Real talk what do you do in your local community. Let alone our world community; that ties us to each other? When is the last time you showed up at a PTA meeting? When is the last time you volunteered for your local community? How many of yawl mentor children other than your own? You can even take an hour out of your day, once a month for story time at bookstores or schools. When is the last time you saw a child messing up and you taught them to be more than their circumstance?

(I doubt you want me to get started on a long list of things we can do as a people that we do not do for the youth/adults. How do you gave back to the people you claim you are trying to protect. And what are you protecting them from. “Words.” When all you have to do is open your eyes and see what is wrong. When we step outside.

I hate that we as black people spend ¾ of our time catering to white folks and shuffling along like cattle, ready for slaughter. By doing the same bullschitt you see the European world do aka white folks. Monkey sees monkey do attitudes. Instead of learning from mistakes of us as a people or even the mistakes you see white folks doing.

We are too lazy to get involved! We would rather put a Band-Aid on a scab instead exposing the truth and healing. This can be done by fighting for our lives as a community or a tribe of people that stand up and demand better for all of us. Some of the things we can change right today; it does not even require a boycott.

Some of change; is just too simply stop how we treat each other. And respecting one another along with lifting a hand to just to help. Instead we quick to call each other filthy names and stand behind “I was keeping it real” we are quick to put women down and call them hoes/bytches; but we do not teach women how not to be hoes. We quick to call men dogs and thugs but are not willing to teach men how to be a man; or how to have hope he can be more than a thug. (Simple respect for each other by taking responsibility for our actions and lack of actions)

Change happens by stopping the negative behavior we do to ourselves and in our homes first. Being honest with who you are as a person, and then taking it on the road with family, friends, the community and the world at large. (But most people are not ready to point fingers at them self.)

People you need to unplug alright; but not from just TV only; but the selfishness that destroys us daily; with the crab in the barrel attitudes and behavior. When is the last time you gave a helping hand to a brother/sister in need or lost just because it was the right thing to do?

Stop putting each other down, we are lost and refuse to heal. I am sorry I doubt this Boycott will get done for several reasons:

Did you contact BET executives and owners and sponsors?

Did you give them a list of demands?

Did you hold a press conference in your local area so it gets national attention?

Did you let any national news service know what your plans are; so the media picks up the story and help spread the word?

Did you contact black own papers and let them know your plans so they can help spread the word also?

Did you contact the NAACP so that you can get support on a larger scale?

Did you give BET a time limit to how long they have before you do a boycott?

Did you investigate the person who started this boycott to see if they are black organization or at the very least really have a grass roots program for change?

Do you have it together; an organize plan to achieve what you are fighting for?

Have you given up after reading this, or are you more determined than ever to fight for this cause?

Has the person who put together this boycott done any of or a few of the things I mention. What are you waiting for?

Honestly do you think just because you stop watching BET for a month is going to get anything changed when the only people that know about your big boycott are on your FaceBook Page. Stop being lazy and upset about something you saw on BET and do real work… to achieve your goal and cause. And if you need help ask for it.

This is a start but you have much work to do before your august 1st deadline. So that someone will take your cause serious you might want to change your boycott date. Perhaps my questions has lit fire and sparked ideas maybe the other people’s comments and input will help spark your idea for change and help make your idea successful.

And I am not knocking what you are doing even if I think it has been poorly organized. I am just not sure BET is your only target in this. Also it does not give enough detail in why you got upset with BET. These are questions that even BET, the Media and people who wish to help you will have or at least should have. A call for a boycott to change must have a reason, a cause and an end result. In my not so humble opinion

Peace!
Sammi
